ISO 42001 explained
What ISO/IEC 42001 covers for AI management systems—and what certification requires.
ISO/IEC 42001 is an international standard for an AI management system (AIMS)—policies, roles, risk treatment, and continual improvement around how your organization develops or uses AI.
What it is not
- A product certification for a single model
- A substitute for sector regulations (health, finance, employment)
- Something this website can grant—we are not an accredited registrar
What organizations typically document
- Scope of AI systems covered by the AIMS
- Risk assessment and treatment for AI lifecycle stages
- Competence and awareness training
- Monitoring, incident handling, and management review records
Certification path (high level)
- Implement policies and controls aligned to the standard text
- Run internal audits and management review
- Engage an accredited certification body for stage 1 / stage 2 audits
- Maintain surveillance audits per the body’s schedule
Read the official ISO/IEC 42001 publication and registrar guidance before budgeting audit costs—we do not quote fees here.
